Woodcut, printed in red and black, of an amputation of the leg

Grosz Chirurgei, (Frankfurt am Main, 1559)
Author: RYFF, Walter Hermann (d. 1548) Artist: N/A

Walter Hermann Ryff was an industrious compiler of medical books engaged by many publishers, who had his books superbly illustrated with woodcuts by some of the best illustrators in Germany. The title-page to Ryff’s book on surgery has one of the most dramatic scenes of an amputation with the surgeon sewing the bleeding leg of the patient.

Wunderkammer is a gallery of unique medical art from the Hagströmer Medico-Historical Library.
