Smellie is one of the most important obstetricians of all times. Through his A Treatise on the Theory and Practice of Midwifery (1752), his teaching was spread throughout the world. In 1754 he also published an atlas with 39 copper-plates, which are superior to any previously published. The figures in natural size were drawn by Jan van Rymsdyk.
