Abrégé de l´art des accouchements ,
(Chalons-sur-Marne, 1773 )
Author: LE BOURSIER DU COUDRAY, Angelique (1714-1794)
Angelique went, by permission of Louis XVI, into all the provinces of France giving instructions free of charge to ”unenlightened midwives” in an attempt to reduce infant mortality. As a method of practical instruction she invented a manikin which was an ingenious mechanism, a life-sized ”femme artificielle” for demonstrating the various positions of the baby and the technique of delivery. It is the first obstetrical book illustrated with colour-printed plates, engraved by J. Robert.
