This work contains the cytological and histological foundations of modern neurology. It is ranked as an outstanding classic of medical science. Cajal solved the great question of the direction of the nerve currents in their travel through the brain and spinal cord. He is not only the greatest of all Spanish scientists, but also one of the greatest scientists of all time. In 1906 he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Camillo Golgi.
