Author: RUEFF, Jacob (c. 1500–1558)
Artist: Jobst Amman
Jakob Rueff wrote a popular guide for midwives, which became one of the most important obstetrical books of the Renaissance period. It was first published in 1554. After Rueff’s death the Frankfurt publisher Sigmund Feyerabend engaged the prolific German book illustrator Jobst Amman to re-illustrate the book. This new edition with Amman’s fine woodcuts is ranked as one of the best illustrated medical books of the sixteenth century.
