Anatomical plate

Anatomia Humani Corporis, (Amsterdam, 1685)
Author: BIDLOO, Govert (1669–1713) Artist: Gerard de Lairesse

Bidloo engaged Gerard de Lairesse, one of the best and most famous Dutch painters to draw the plates for his anatomical atlas. By including ordinary objects such as books and jars, and by showing the pins and cords which held the dissections on place, the artist brought the qualities of Dutch still-life painting into anatomical illustration. The engravings are artistically perfect. It is one of the finest and largest atlases, both in format and the number of plates in the entire literature of general anatomy.
